Desire: strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen
Entice: to lead on by exciting hope or desire; persuade
When you desire something, the enemy will magnify people or situations around you, that have the very thing you want. For example, You want to be in a relationship but God has you in a season of singleness. Suddenly, it seems like everyone around you are in relationships. It will look pleasing to the eye and may cause a sense of loneliness. Then when a nice guy comes around, you settle for him because you longed for a relationship so strongly. Yet, ignored all the red flags that were sent your way and end up heart broken. Another example, you want a promotion and it seems like everyone around you are getting offered higher positions, except you. Now, you feel discontent with your portion.
Lets go back to where it all started, the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve could eat from any tree excluding the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, or surely die (Genesis 2:16-17). Then this little serpent came slithering along, enticing Eve. Girl, you will not die but your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil (Genesis 3). That was all she needed to hear in order to fulfill that craving. Eve ate from the tree, gave the fruit to her husband to devour, and their eyes were opened. The fall of man!
The course of the world was altered by that one simple incident. DESIRE! Now, am I saying desire is wrong…absolutely NOT! However, you must take into consideration the timing God has for you. When events do not occur fast enough, we indulge in our thoughts. “Oh I need to get a different job to be promoted faster” “He’s a nice guy and my clock is ticking, so I might as well get in a relationship”. We do what we want because it looks or sounds good. ENTICEMENT! Imagine what can happen in your own life or your children’s, children lives, by you going ahead of God. All of us have been through situations where we got ourselves in a hole and had to climb out of it. However, we do not have to continue to make the same mistakes.
You have to be careful that the possessions you long for, are not clouding your judgment. Like Eve, she knew they were not allowed to eat from the tree. However, she allowed the serpent to cloud the truth and she fell for the trap. Then life was hard! The enemy will use your desires to entice you. Fight the thoughts that breed discontentment and jealousy with the promises of the word. Rest in knowing that God operates in his own timing and not yours. Trust him and remember he has not forgotten you.
I know the plans that I have for you. Thoughts of peace, not of evil, plans to prosper and not harm Jeremiah 29:11
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not on your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5
